UPDATE: Community outrage is brewing in Santa Clarita over a controversial plan for an eight-story courthouse at the corner of McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, just across from the local mall. The proposal was unveiled during a public meeting on November 12, 2023, hosted by representatives from the Judicial Council.

Residents are voicing strong opposition, arguing that the courthouse would drastically alter the character of their community. The proposed facility aims to consolidate all juvenile criminal cases from the San Fernando Valley and handle felony arraignments from surrounding areas, raising alarms about increased criminal activity and traffic congestion in the heart of Santa Clarita.

Denise Lite, a prominent local figure and City Council candidate, has emerged as a leading voice against the project. She emphasized her concerns about the potential negative impact on the quality of life for residents. “Placing a regional courthouse in the heart of town… will significantly degrade the quality of life we all enjoy here,” Lite stated during the meeting.

The proposed courthouse’s location is particularly troubling for residents living near neighborhoods like The Summit, The Bungalows, and Old Orchard. Lite warns that the influx of court-related activity could pose safety risks and make emergency response more challenging. “This location and increased traffic will undoubtedly make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to get to the hospital,” she added.

The community has until November 26 to voice their opinions, with Lite urging residents to submit comments to Kim Bobic at [email protected]. She stresses that silence on this issue could be interpreted as acceptance of the plans, which she vehemently opposes. “I am running for City Council to represent District 2 because I believe in protecting what makes Santa Clarita special for all residents,” Lite emphasized.

As the deadline approaches, residents are encouraged to engage in discussions and express their views, highlighting the importance of community input in the decision-making process. This proposed courthouse could change Santa Clarita’s landscape forever, and residents are urged to act swiftly to protect their community.
