Koreans Outraged as Rape Convict’s Sentence Reduced to Just 5 Years
UPDATE: The Seoul High Court has sparked nationwide outrage after drastically reducing the prison sentence of Kim, a 30-year-old male streamer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman during a live broadcast. The court’s decision to cut his sentence from eight years to just five years has been met with fierce backlash from the Korean public.
In May 2025, Kim was sentenced for raping a woman who was reportedly intoxicated and drugged while being livestreamed to an audience of 200 viewers, none of whom reported the assault to authorities. The court initially deemed Kim’s actions as profit-driven molestation, but the appellate court argued that he did not receive direct financial benefits from the broadcast, leading to the controversial reduction of his sentence.
The ruling drew immediate condemnation. Social media is flooded with reactions from furious netizens, questioning the judges’ motives. One user expressed, “The judges were part of the 200 viewers, huh? Because how else could they possibly reduce a sentence like this?” Another remarked, “This is insane,” highlighting widespread sentiment that the judicial system is failing victims.
In a shocking twist, the court noted that one of Kim’s victims did not wish for him to be punished, which influenced their decision. Critics argue that victims often feel pressured to forgive or minimize the repercussions for their attackers due to fear of retaliation. “So many victims say that because they’re scared of what happens after the offender is released,” another netizen lamented.
This disturbing case follows a similar public outcry regarding the sentencing of former NCT member Taeil for aggravated rape, which also ignited fierce debate about the treatment of sexual crimes in South Korea. The stark reality is that many in the public feel the justice system is regressing rather than progressing in addressing these serious offenses.
As protests erupt online and calls for justice grow louder, the focus shifts to what will happen next. Will there be public demonstrations demanding accountability from the judges? How will authorities respond to this mounting pressure? The situation remains fluid, with citizens urging for a judicial system that prioritizes victims over perpetrators.
The Korean public’s anger over this ruling underscores a broader societal issue regarding sexual violence and the judicial response. As the conversation continues, many are left to wonder what it will take to ensure justice for victims in South Korea. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
