Indiana has announced significant initiatives aimed at improving recycling efforts and community engagement across the state. In a recent release, the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board revealed the allocation of $42 million in grants to six organizations, including Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., to enhance recycling capabilities statewide.
Goodwill Industries in Lake County will receive $301,011 to divert an additional 32,812 tons of recyclable materials annually. This initiative is expected to create 42 jobs and prevent nearly 197,884 tons of waste from entering landfills each year. Other grant recipients include CT Polymers, Greencycle, Nexus IN RNG – Laporte, Plastic Recycling Inc., and the Trustees of Indiana University, with funding ranging from $45,000 to $500,000.
State Board Appointments and Community Support
In leadership developments, Governor Mike Braun appointed several residents from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties to various state boards and commissions. Notable appointments include Elizabeth Bergeron for the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission and Thomas Collins to the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority Board. These appointments reflect the state’s commitment to involving local voices in governance.
Additionally, Indiana Dunes Tourism is offering $50,000 in grants for community projects, marketing initiatives, and events designed to attract visitors to Porter County. The application deadline is set for December 1, 2023, with recipients expected to be announced on January 5, 2024. Eligible organizations include for-profits, non-profits, and government entities, all aiming to boost local tourism.
Healthcare and Mentorship Initiatives
In healthcare news, Dr. Marrium Siddiqui, an infectious disease physician, has joined the Franciscan Physician Network in Crown Point and is now accepting new patients. Dr. Siddiqui holds a medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University and completed her residency in internal medicine at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Her expertise is expected to enhance medical services in the area.
The Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association has also opened applications for its mentoring program. This initiative aims to support the development of future women leaders through a six-month program of mentorship and professional growth. Interested applicants must be active members of the association, with the application deadline set for December 3, 2023.
Lastly, beginning in January 2024, Indiana residents will have the opportunity to purchase a new specialty license plate supporting Purdue University Northwest. Each plate, which features the university’s colors and logo, will contribute $25 toward student scholarships. The initiative aims to foster school spirit while supporting higher education in the region.
These developments illustrate Indiana’s commitment to enhancing community engagement, environmental sustainability, and healthcare access, paving the way for future growth and collaboration.
