Richard Gere Urges Kindness in Parenting, Inspired by Dalai Lama
UPDATE: Actor Richard Gere, aged 76, reveals his most crucial parenting lesson is to show kindness, a message inspired by his long-time friend, the Dalai Lama. In a recent interview with People, Gere emphasized the importance of this principle for his three sons, stating, “You show kindness. That’s the best thing you can do.”
The actor’s insight comes from a profound conversation between friends and the Dalai Lama. Gere recalled a moment when a couple sought advice from His Holiness while expecting a child. “Teach them to be kind to insects, whom normally people don’t think well of and step on,” Gere recounted. He noted that respecting all forms of life is a lesson that extends into every aspect of life.
This message resonates deeply, especially in today’s world where compassion is more vital than ever. As a practicing Buddhist since 1978, Gere has shared a close friendship with the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, for decades, which has heavily influenced his outlook on life and parenting.
Gere’s spiritual journey began in his 20s, when he grappled with profound questions about meaning and purpose. He reflected, “What is this? Why am I here? What has meaning?” This quest for understanding has shaped his approach to life and raising his children.
In addition to his parenting insights, Gere recently produced a documentary titled “Wisdom of Happiness,” featuring the Dalai Lama. This film premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October 2024, further highlighting the actor’s commitment to sharing spiritual wisdom.
Gere first met the Dalai Lama in the foothills of the Himalayas, where the spiritual leader lived in exile. He described the experience as profoundly impactful, stating, “Even from the first time I met him, he’s completely simple and direct and honest. There’s no pretense about him whatsoever.” This genuine connection has fueled Gere’s mission to spread kindness and compassion.
The urgency of Gere’s message is clear: in a fast-paced world, teaching children kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity. As parents and guardians, the responsibility lies in instilling these values in the next generation.
