Thanksgiving 2025: Turkey Prices Surge 75% Amid Avian Flu Crisis
UPDATE: With Thanksgiving just weeks away, shoppers are scrambling to navigate skyrocketing turkey prices, which have surged 75% compared to last year. The average price for turkey is now around $2.05 per pound, according to a recent analysis by the Purdue University College of Agriculture. This alarming increase is largely attributed to the ongoing avian influenza outbreak affecting poultry flocks nationwide since February 2022.
As families prepare for the holiday feast, the rising costs could significantly impact budgets. Retailers are stepping up to attract customers with special promotions on turkey and other holiday staples. “Grocery retailers are competing for customers, and many are offering significant discounts on turkeys to entice shoppers,” the analysis states.
Here’s a breakdown of where to find the cheapest options this Thanksgiving:
Aldi is selling frozen Jennie-O whole turkeys for just 77 cents per pound. Meanwhile, Walmart has smoked whole frozen Butterball turkeys priced at $2.29 per pound. Shoppers can also take advantage of rewards programs, with select promotions running through November 27.
At Giant, customers can earn rewards points redeemable for a free frozen Shady Brook Farms turkey (up to 20 pounds) with just 400 points. Additionally, shoppers can snag frozen turkeys for $5.99 when they spend $50 in a single transaction.
For those shopping at Lidl, frozen whole young turkeys are available for an astounding 25 cents per pound with a digital coupon, limited to two turkeys per customer. Other options include premium all-natural Butterball turkeys and Shady Brook Farms fresh young turkeys for 99 cents per pound.
Price Rite is making headlines with its lowest-price guarantee, offering to beat any competitor’s turkey price by 1 cent per pound. They are selling Good & Gather frozen turkeys for 79 cents per pound, while fresh options range up to $3.99 per pound for organic varieties.
At Weis Markets, shoppers can accumulate points for discounts on turkeys and other holiday essentials. The chain is offering Weis Quality frozen turkeys at a steep discount based on points accrued through purchases.
Wegmans is holding steady with last year’s prices, allowing customers with Shopper’s Club Cards to buy Shady Brook frozen turkeys for just 59 cents per pound, provided they meet the minimum purchase requirement.
As the holiday approaches, experts recommend that consumers shop around for the best deals. With turkey prices fluctuating widely, being informed can lead to significant savings. This year, it’s not just about the turkey; it’s about finding the best overall value for a family feast that’s more important than ever.
Shoppers are urged to act quickly, as promotions vary and may expire soon. With Thanksgiving only weeks away, the time to secure a budget-friendly turkey is NOW. Keep an eye on local grocery ads and take advantage of reward programs to make the most of your holiday shopping!
