Mamdani Aims for $4 Million Transition Fundraising Goal

New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, has announced a significant fundraising goal of $4 million for his transition period, surpassing the totals raised by the previous two administrations. This ambitious target aims to ensure that he can immediately implement his policies starting January 1, 2024, rather than just preparing for his administration.

During a recent statement, Mamdani expressed, “We’re still asking for your help because we need to raise $4 million in total so January 1 can be the day we start to deliver, not start to prepare.” He emphasized the necessity of these funds for various critical aspects, including vetting the estimated 50,000 resumes received, hiring transition staff, and organizing his inauguration event.

In just two weeks, Mamdani’s campaign has successfully raised over $1 million, with an average contribution of $77.65 from 12,707 donors. He highlighted the contrast in fundraising efforts between his campaign and that of Mayor Eric Adams, noting that the previous administration’s total was “much lower” than expected, with an average donation of $1,219 leading to a total of approximately $2 million.

Transition Plans and Funding Uses

The funds raised during this transition phase will primarily focus on staffing and inauguration expenses. According to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, acceptable expenditures include office setup, payroll, consulting fees, and event costs associated with the inauguration. This includes catering, entertainment, and rental fees.

Mamdani has until January 31, 2026, to continue fundraising, after which his campaign will be restricted from incurring further transition-related expenses, with exceptions only for specific liabilities or audits.

As the mayor-elect prepares for his inauguration, he has appointed a team composed largely of progressive figures, including Lina Khan, former Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission, as co-chair. Khan is reportedly exploring city laws to further Mamdani’s affordability agenda, which aims to reduce costs for residents, particularly in healthcare.

Mamdani has also appointed Elle Bisgaard-Church as his chief of staff. Bisgaard-Church has played a pivotal role in shaping the affordability policies that Mamdani is expected to implement. In addition, he has brought on board Dean Fuleihan, a former First Deputy Mayor under Bill de Blasio, known for his expertise in budget management.
