Salvatore “Sam” Nicastro, Beloved Community Figure, Passes Away at 94

UPDATE: Salvatore “Sam” Nicastro, a cherished member of the Colonie community, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on November 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. This loss resonates deeply within the community, reflecting the profound impact he had on countless lives.

Born in Schenectady on May 29, 1931, Sam was not only a devoted husband to Angeline “Angie” Perfetto Nicastro, whom he wed on June 6, 1953, but also a beloved father and grandfather. Orphaned at just five years old, he was raised by his devoted Godparents, Domenica and Rosario Catalfamo. His life story exemplifies resilience and dedication.

Sam was a talented musician, known for his love of music, especially the classics of Frank Sinatra. A tenor saxophonist, he gained popularity in high school, leading his own seven-piece band that entertained at weddings and social events. For 25 years, he played with Lenny Riccardi’s band, leaving a lasting musical legacy.

His service to his country during the Korean War as a member of the Navy further highlights his commitment to community and family. Sam was honorably discharged in 1953 and continued to inspire his children and grandchildren with unwavering support and encouragement.

Sam’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He served as an altar server at St. Anthony’s Church in his youth and remained an active communicant of St. Luke’s Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM.

Beyond his musical talents and military service, Sam was known for his simplicity and joy in family gatherings. He instilled in his loved ones a strong work ethic and the importance of striving for excellence. His family expresses deep gratitude to Dr. Parag Parikh for exceptional care and to Community Hospice, particularly nurses Lou Brown and Paul Thomas, for their dedicated support.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at Cannon/Jones Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave, Colonie. Following the mass on Friday, Sam will be entombed at Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Community Hospice, located at 310 S. Manning Blvd, Albany, NY 12208.

As the community mourns the loss of Salvatore “Sam” Nicastro, his legacy of love, music, and family will continue to inspire all who knew him.
