Melania Trump Celebrates Marine Corps Anniversary, Discusses AI in Warfare
First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Usha Vance visited military families and troops on November 10, 2023, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps. During this significant event at the Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina, they highlighted the enduring legacy of the Marine Corps while addressing the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in modern warfare.
In her remarks, Mrs. Trump underscored the vital role of AI within the Trump administration’s defense strategy. She stated, “Technology is changing the art of war. Predictably, AI will alter war more profoundly than any technology since nuclear weapons.” This assertion aligns with the administration’s ongoing expansion of AI initiatives as part of its broader military strategy.
The visit marked the first joint appearance of the First and Second Ladies, who acknowledged the service of the Marine Corps, including two Marines—Sergeant Blake Donoher and Corporal Daishamari Cannon—whom they welcomed on stage. In her speech, Trump emphasized that speed would be the most significant change brought about by AI, noting, “Artificial intelligence will take center stage in the theater of war… but of course, it is the Marine who will always play the most critical role in realizing mission success.”
During the event, Mrs. Trump expressed concern regarding the transition from human operators to machines, stating, “We are moving from human operators to human overseers – fast.” She elaborated on the advancements already present in the military, including autonomous helicopters and drones, while hinting at future developments such as fighter-less jets and autonomous bombers.
The First Lady’s comments came in conjunction with President Donald Trump’s recent statements advocating for a single federal standard for AI regulation, as opposed to a disjointed approach among individual states. Earlier in the week, he emphasized the necessity of uniformity in regulatory frameworks on his social media platform.
The visit also coincided with Thanksgiving preparations, as both women engaged with students at Camp Lejeune, showcasing AI projects for the Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge. A heartwarming moment occurred when Mrs. Trump interacted with a shy student, encouraging him before embracing him.
In concluding her remarks, Trump expressed her gratitude to service members and their families, stating, “To every Service Member — thank you for standing watch so others can celebrate in peace. And to every military spouse and child — thank you for your strength and love. You serve our country, too.” She encouraged unity during the Thanksgiving season, emphasizing shared values and pride in those who serve.
This visit reflects Melania Trump’s growing engagement in her role as First Lady, marking a notable moment in her public service efforts alongside Usha Vance.
