Nathan Swanepoel from Scotts Valley has made a remarkable debut on the international gymnastics stage, earning a silver medal for Team USA at the 31st Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) World Age Group Competitions. The event took place on October 22, 2023, at the Navarra Arena in Pamplona, Spain. Competing in the Men’s Double-Mini Trampoline category for ages 17 to 21, Swanepoel achieved a final score of 25.100.

Gymnasts from 46 countries participated in this prestigious competition, showcasing their skills on a global platform. Swanepoel’s achievement is particularly impressive as it marks his first international competition. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he expressed his excitement: “I am beyond happy with how my first World Age Group Competition went. Placed second in prelims and secured a second place medal in finals. I have so much gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Spain for the U.S., and I am very thankful for the support from all of my coaches and medical staff. Could not have asked for a better week. Y gracias España.”

The gold medal in the same category was claimed by Canada’s Jeremy Meyer, who scored 25.200, while Australia’s River Mallam took home the bronze with a score of 24.900. The competition not only highlighted individual accomplishments but also reflected the dedication and talent present in the gymnastics community.

Swanepoel is currently a student at Arizona State University and trains at North Valley Gymnastics in Phoenix. He began his gymnastics journey in 2013 under the guidance of coach Vernon Vargas at Vargas Academy of Gymnastics. This foundation has undoubtedly contributed to his success at the World Age Group Championships.

Another noteworthy competitor from the same region, Taj Rodriguez Gleitsman, also represented the United States. The Aptos High School alumnus competed in three events and finished 19th out of 87 athletes in the Individual Men’s Trampoline prelims, where only the top eight advanced to the finals. Additionally, he partnered with Changamire Anderson in the Men’s Synchronized Pair Trampoline, securing 15th place out of 33 teams. Gleitsman also participated in the Individual Men’s Double-Mini Trampoline, where he placed 41st.

Swanepoel’s silver medal and Gleitsman’s participation highlight the growing talent in American gymnastics. These young athletes are setting the stage for future competitions and inspiring the next generation of gymnasts. With their hard work and dedication, they are not only making their mark on the sport but also bringing pride to their country on the international stage.
