Giants General Manager Joe Schoen’s Future Remains Uncertain

The future of Joe Schoen as general manager of the New York Giants appears to be in question, following the team’s decision to part ways with head coach Brian Daboll. While Schoen retains his position for now, there are indications he may not remain through the winter. Despite this uncertainty, sources within the organization suggest that Schoen is not likely to leave anytime soon.

According to ESPN‘s Jordan Raanan, Schoen’s contract runs through 2026, and multiple league sources believe he will continue in his role unless a top-tier head coaching candidate wishes to select a new general manager. “Though, that seems unlikely considering Schoen is leading the search and compiling the list of candidates,” Raanan reported on Thursday. Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch have previously stated that Schoen will “lead the search for a new head coach.”

Despite his ongoing position, Schoen’s tenure has not been without criticism. The Giants have struggled significantly, posting a record of 11-34 since the start of the 2023 season. Additionally, the recent performance of rookie pass-rusher Abdul Carter, who was benched after missing a walk-through, has raised concerns about draft decisions made under Schoen’s leadership.

Nevertheless, potential head coaching candidates do not appear deterred by Schoen’s presence. Raanan notes that one source familiar with the situation characterized the Giants’ coaching job as “highly coveted.” The team boasts a promising young core, including rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, injured wide receiver Malik Nabers, left tackle Andrew Thomas, injured rookie running back Cam Skattebo, and Carter, all of whom contribute to the appeal of the position.

In a separate article, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic interviewed an unnamed senior executive who expressed concerns about the Giants’ decision to attach a new head coach to Schoen. “A red flag, to me, when an organization just fires a coach is that they’re not being introspective enough about the shortcomings around the coach,” the executive stated. This perspective suggests that simply changing the coach may not resolve the underlying issues within the organization.

As of Thursday morning, the Giants, with a 2-9 record, are listed as 10-point underdogs for their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions (6-4). If the game unfolds unfavorably for the Giants, speculation regarding Schoen’s future is likely to intensify, despite the reassurances from league insiders. The coming weeks will be crucial for Schoen as he navigates the challenges of rebuilding the team while facing scrutiny over his decisions and leadership.
