Cupertino Names Tina Kapoor Permanent City Manager in Unanimous Vote
UPDATE: Cupertino City Council has just announced the appointment of Tina Kapoor as the permanent city manager following a unanimous vote on November 18, 2023. Kapoor, who has served as interim city manager since May, officially assumes her new role today, marking a significant leadership change for the city.
Kapoor brings nearly 25 years of governmental experience, having previously held key positions in the cities of San José, Fremont, and Cupertino. Her extensive background includes roles as interim assistant city manager, deputy city manager, and economic development manager in Cupertino.
Before her interim appointment, Kapoor was instrumental in leading economic development initiatives in both Fremont and San José, where she was recognized as a Woman of Influence in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2015. Kapoor’s leadership has been pivotal in supporting local businesses and revitalizing downtown areas.
As Cupertino’s first Indian American city manager, Kapoor’s appointment is historic and carries significant community impact. She immigrated from India in 1999, and her journey reflects the diverse fabric of Cupertino. In her new role, Kapoor will manage all municipal operations and execute City Council policies while continuing to advance the city’s priorities.
“I look forward to supporting our strong city team and collaborating with council and the community to maintain the high level of service that the city provides to our residents while developing a vision for the city’s future,” Kapoor stated in a press release.
Cupertino Mayor Liang Chao expressed confidence in Kapoor’s abilities, noting, “Tina Kapoor’s experience, work ethic, and leadership make her exceptionally well-suited to guide Cupertino forward.” She added, “Tina has been a great partner for the City Council since she was appointed interim city manager, and I look forward to working with her to continue to strengthen our organization.”
This leadership change is poised to influence Cupertino’s future direction significantly. Residents and stakeholders are eager to see how Kapoor’s background in economic development will shape municipal strategies moving forward.
Stay tuned for more updates as Cupertino embarks on this new chapter under Tina Kapoor’s leadership.
