Study Links Strangulation to Long-Term Brain Injury in Women
A recent study conducted by investigators from Mass General Brigham has revealed significant long-term effects of strangulation-related brain injuries linked to intimate partner violence (IPV). The findings indicate that women who have experienced strangulation often report ongoing vision problems and symptoms of traumatic stress many years after the incident.
Globally, nearly one in three women has encountered intimate partner violence, with approximately 68% of those experiencing strangulation, a dangerous act that can obstruct air and blood flow to the brain, potentially leading to serious brain injuries. The study, published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, emphasizes the importance of understanding the lasting health consequences of such violence. Corresponding author Eve Valera, Ph.D., an investigator in the Mass General Brigham Department of Psychiatry, stated, “This study highlights potential long-term consequences of IPV-related strangulation and reinforces the importance of IPV prevention and providing treatment for women in need.”
Research Methodology and Findings
The study involved 139 participants, primarily white women, who were recruited through flyers, online advertisements, and social media platforms. Researchers carefully categorized participants based on their experiences with strangulation to accurately assess the severity of symptoms. Three subgroups emerged: those who experienced strangulation only, those who suffered altered consciousness—such as seeing stars or tunnel vision—and those who lost consciousness completely.
Of the participants, 64% reported a history of IPV-related strangulation. Among them, 30% experienced alterations in consciousness, while 15% reported complete loss of consciousness. During the study, which took place between July 2020 and February 2023, participants self-reported various symptoms, including dizziness, vision and hearing issues, poor concentration, anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress. Notably, the average time since the last strangulation event was 8.7 years prior to their interviews.
The results showed that participants who had experienced strangulation were more likely to report greater symptoms of vision problems and traumatic stress. Strangulation with alterations in consciousness correlated with increased vision issues, while complete loss of consciousness was linked to heightened traumatic stress symptoms. These findings suggest that neurobehavioral issues and traumatic stress may persist long after the initial event of strangulation.
Implications for Awareness and Treatment
Dr. Valera remarked on the need for increased awareness regarding strangulation, stating, “Strangulation is under-reported, and more work is needed to encourage disclosure, social interventions, and timely health care for those subjected to these violent events.” This highlights the necessity for improved support systems and resources for women who have experienced IPV.
The study underscores the importance of further research and advocacy for prevention measures and treatment options for individuals affected by intimate partner violence. As the long-term consequences of strangulation become clearer, addressing these issues will be crucial in fostering healthier communities and supporting survivors.
