The film No Comment, directed by Petter Næss, critiques political spin and scandal management through a fictional narrative inspired by real events in Norway. Premiering at the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, the movie explores the murky waters of political power and the lengths individuals will go to maintain their positions.

The story centers on Alma Solvik, played by Laila Goody, a Prime Minister facing a scandal involving her husband Sondre. The film’s synopsis reveals that Sondre engages in questionable stock transactions, seemingly leveraging insider information during Alma’s time in office. As the political landscape becomes increasingly fraught, Alma assembles a crisis communication team led by Karianne, portrayed by Pia Tjelta. The duo’s strategy includes a campaign that shifts blame onto Sondre, emphasizing the necessity of winning an upcoming election.

Næss commented, “This is a universal story about the will to power and how far you’re willing to go to maintain your position.” While Alma wins the election in the film, Næss noted that the real-life counterpart faced significant backlash, suggesting that stubbornness can lead to political downfall.

In crafting their characters, the actors drew inspiration from real-life figures. Tjelta referenced Kellyanne Conway as a source for her role, stating, “I read a little bit about her and how different Norwegian PR houses worked.” She highlighted the character’s ambition and the extent to which individuals will go to achieve their goals.

Goody found parallels between her character and Norway’s former Prime Minister. She noted, “What struck me was that she’s a very composed woman. She gives very little away.” This complexity made the role appealing to Goody, who has a fondness for political satire, likening the film to popular series like The West Wing.

The film’s comedic approach surprised some critics, including members of the political party that Alma’s character represents. Goody remarked, “Politicians in her party were afraid that we were going to murder her character on screen.” Instead, the film balances humor with warmth and compassion towards those in power, while still holding them accountable.

At the heart of No Comment is a critique of political dishonesty. The filmmakers wanted to demonstrate the human struggle behind the political facade. Næss aimed to capture the absurdity of adults acting childishly in power, stating, “I think it’s interesting to see people who should know better come up with a lie, and everybody tells you that you’re lying, but you stick to the lie.”

The film also features a memorable scene where the two female leads rap together as a way to cope with their scandal. Goody remarked, “The rap took practice, I promise you. We had one of the best female rappers as a coach.” Tjelta echoed this sentiment, calling the experience one of the hardest tasks she has ever undertaken.

Despite initial expectations that the film would take a harsher tone, the creative team emphasized its underlying warmth. Næss explained that the film intentionally avoids delving into the personal lives of the political figures involved, particularly out of respect for their family. “We don’t bring them in,” he noted.

Writer Ståle Stein Berg highlighted the importance of humor in today’s political climate. “The importance of laughter can’t be emphasized enough, especially in these times, because we’re enraged every day,” he explained. The film aims to provide relief through laughter while reflecting the realities of political life.

Ultimately, No Comment serves as a reminder of the need for honesty in politics. Goody concluded, “I think politicians would benefit if they started to be more honest and open, because people are so sick of the spin.”
