Mercedes-Benz Marks 130 Years with the World’s Oldest Van

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the world’s oldest operational van, a historic vehicle manufactured over a century ago, is still in running condition. This remarkable model, known as the Benz Ideal Van, was produced in 1899 and represents the company’s pioneering spirit in the automotive industry.

In 1896, what was then known as Benz & Cie created a groundbreaking vehicle that many consider the first delivery van. This initial model was commissioned by the renowned Bon Marché department store in Paris for a price of 4,500 marks, equivalent to approximately €2,300 today. Unlike modern vans, it resembled a horse-drawn carriage, lacking a steering wheel and exposing the driver to the elements.

Innovative Beginnings in Van Manufacturing

The early models produced by Benz & Cie included two distinct types of vans, reflecting the automotive styles of the time. The first, referred to as a “closed body car,” drew inspiration from the 1893 Benz Victoria, which was designed for two passengers and featured a folding roof. The second model was a mixed van, influenced by the Benz Velocipede, a lighter and smaller vehicle that had no roof.

These mixed versions were particularly innovative, as their design allowed for quick transformation from a cargo vehicle to a passenger car with two seats. Both models were equipped with rear-mounted engines, a four-stroke single-cylinder. The delivery version boasted an engine displacement of 2.7 liters, while the mixed model had 1.0 liter, generating between 2.75 and 6 horsepower. They could reach speeds of up to 20 km/h and transport approximately 300 kilograms, surpassing the capacity of a horse-drawn carriage of the era.

A Legacy of Innovation

Among the few surviving historical examples is the Benz Ideal Van, which was built under Hewetson’s Ltd. license in the United Kingdom. This particular van has a 3-horsepower engine that can still carry 100 kilograms along with the driver. Although it is three years newer than the original delivery model, it has been meticulously restored and is now part of the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection.

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz Vans, the company plans to showcase the Benz Ideal Van at historical events alongside its latest models, including the popular Sprinter van. According to the magazine Car and Driver, the Sprinter has captured 77% of the European market, solidifying Mercedes-Benz’s position as a leader in the van segment. Dirk Weyhenmeyer, a historian at Mercedes-Benz in Germany, emphasizes the significance of this anniversary in recognizing the company’s long-standing commitment to innovation and quality.

Celebrating 130 years is no small feat, both for an individual and a corporation. For Mercedes-Benz, it symbolizes a journey that began with a simple concept of transporting goods more efficiently. From that initial order placed by Bon Marché in 1896 to the advanced Sprinter model of today, the company has continuously evolved its offerings.
