Pierce County Allocates $857,250 for Wilkeson Eco-Tourism Boost
UPDATE: Pierce County has just announced a significant investment of $857,250 to enhance eco-tourism and conservation efforts in Wilkeson. This funding, approved by the Pierce County Council on October 21, comes in response to the recent closure of the Fairfax Bridge, which has negatively impacted local access and tourism activities.
County Executive Ryan Mello emphasized the urgent need for this investment, stating, “This investment expands public access to our region’s incredible natural beauty while supporting local economic opportunities vital to the Wilkeson community.” The funds will be allocated to expand Coke Oven Park and conserve the surrounding natural landscapes, benefiting both residents and visitors alike.
The project includes plans for new hiking trails, a historic mining tour, and potential campsites across 139 newly acquired acres. These developments aim to protect the Wilkeson Creek ecosystem while stabilizing the town’s economy, which has faced challenges due to reduced tourist traffic.
Mayor-elect Jayme Peloli, who is spearheading the Wilkeson’s Way Forward campaign, highlighted the project’s significance for community engagement. “Through this investment, we’re creating a space where people can connect with nature and explore Wilkeson’s history,” Peloli noted, underscoring the town’s commitment to improving outdoor recreational areas.
This initiative is partially funded by Pierce County Conservation Futures, a program dedicated to preserving land for wildlife, recreation, and community green spaces. The investment is expected to attract more visitors, enhance local education, and support the economy, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the region.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on the project, which promises to revitalize Wilkeson’s eco-tourism landscape and bolster community ties through nature and history.
As this story develops, it is clear that the economic and environmental stakes are high. The community of Wilkeson is on the brink of transformation, and all eyes will be on the progress of these exciting new initiatives.
