Detroit Fire Department Welcomes 51 New Firefighter/EMTs
The Detroit Fire Department proudly graduated its Class 89, welcoming 51 newly trained Firefighter/EMTs into its ranks. This event took place on March 15, 2024, at Second Ebenezer Church, marking a significant milestone for the graduates who have completed intensive training in emergency medical services and firefighting.
Chief Jamal Mickles expressed his pride in the cadets, stating, “These 51 cadets have risen to every challenge we set before them.” He emphasized their unwavering commitment throughout the rigorous training program, asserting, “I have full confidence that they are ready to serve Detroit at the next level with courage, skill, and compassion,” according to the City of Detroit.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms highlighted the graduates’ connection to a long-standing tradition of service within the community. He remarked, “These new trial firefighters carry forward a passion for community, and many are following in the footsteps of parents and grandparents who served before them.” The training included essential skills such as fire attack, search and rescue, and Rapid Intervention Rescue, equipping the graduates to effectively respond to both fires and medical emergencies.
The graduation ceremony was attended by notable figures including Deputy Mayor Melia Howard, Chief David Nelson, and Councilmember Scott Benson. Howard addressed the new firefighters, stating, “The badge you wear is a promise to the Citizens of Detroit that you protect them with every ounce of your strength and every beat of your heart.”
A standout moment of the ceremony was the story of Trial Firefighter Andre Vaughn, who overcame an initial setback in his journey to becoming a firefighter. After earning his EMT license elsewhere, he returned to complete the academy. Vaughn shared, “I didn’t give up. I knew this is where I wanted to spend my career. I did the work, came back, and today I’m a Detroit firefighter. This moment means everything to me.”
The City of Detroit is currently accepting applications for future cadet classes, encouraging those interested to visit its official website for more information. The graduation of Class 89 not only strengthens the Detroit Fire Department but also reinforces the city’s commitment to public safety and community service.
