Ferndale Native to Pilot Flyover at Chiefs-Colts Match

Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini, a seasoned pilot with 15 years of experience, has been selected to participate in a flyover at the Kansas City Chiefs versus Indianapolis Colts game on November 5, 2023. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. in Kansas City, as part of the NFL’s celebration of Military Appreciation Month. Coppini, who grew up in Ferndale, will be flying one of four jets as a member of the 87th Flying Training Squadron, commonly known as the “Red Bulls.”

Coppini is typically based at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, recognized as the leading pilot training facility within the Air Education and Training Command. His squadron has a tradition of requesting flyover opportunities, and although he has been with them for about a year, this will be his first flyover event. Each T-38C Talon, the U.S. Air Force’s primary training jet, will have two pilots flying in formation during the game.

With a military career spanning nearly two decades, Coppini’s journey began when he enlisted and served in security forces for four years. After his initial deployment, he applied to the Officers’ Training School and transitioned into aviation. His career has included eight deployments, with missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and various locations across Africa.

Reflecting on his roots, Coppini shared, “The support from family and friends back home has been awesome. Growing up in a small town, you don’t realize how special your community is until you leave.” He attributes much of his success to the strong foundation built during his upbringing in Humboldt County.

As he prepares for the flyover, Coppini expressed gratitude for the experiences that have shaped his career. “I absolutely love what I do,” he stated. “At this point in my career, not a lot of people get the opportunity to fly as often as I do. Being able to instruct the next generation of pilots is an amazing experience.”

His mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed immense pride in her son’s accomplishments. She recalled the excitement surrounding his promotion to lieutenant colonel last May, as well as the anticipation leading up to the flyover. “We’re super proud of him,” she said. “He’s done so much in his career, and he’s just amazing.”

Coppini’s determination has been evident since his high school days, where he famously overcame significant challenges in athletics, demonstrating his tenacity and competitive spirit. As he looks to the future, he and his wife plan to retire in Springfield, Missouri, continuing to honor the values instilled in him during his upbringing.

The flyover at the Chiefs-Colts game stands as a testament to his dedication and service, further reinforcing his connection to his hometown and the community that has supported him throughout his military journey.
