The acclaimed sci-fi comedy Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and featuring Emma Stone, is making its way to home entertainment sooner than anticipated. Following a disappointing box office performance, grossing only $32 million, the film will be available for digital rental and purchase starting on November 25, 2023. Physical copies, including 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD, will follow on December 23, 2023, according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Adapted from the South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia revolves around two cousins who, driven by conspiracy theories, kidnap a powerful CEO, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying humanity. As they prepare for a showdown, their plans spiral into chaos, revealing the absurdity of their delusions. The film features a cast that includes Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis, alongside Alicia Silverstone and others.

Critical reception has been strong despite the film’s lackluster box office results. It holds an impressive 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 84% from audiences. Collider reviewer Ross Bonaime praised the performances of Stone and Plemons as among the best of the year, while highlighting Delbis as a vital addition to the narrative.

For those interested in the creative process, the home release will include a behind-the-scenes featurette titled “The Birth of the Bees: The Making of Bugonia,” offering insights into the film’s production.

Future Projects for Lanthimos and Stone

After their recent collaborations, which also include Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, both Lanthimos and Stone appear to be taking a brief hiatus. The director expressed a desire to step back after the demanding schedules of their recent projects. Similarly, Stone has not publicly announced any upcoming roles but is actively involved in producing. She is attached to a new musical comedy by Jesse Eisenberg, set to feature an ensemble cast including Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti.

Production for Eisenberg’s project began in April, but details regarding its release date remain under wraps. As both artists plan their next moves, fans of Bugonia can look forward to its home entertainment debut, celebrating a film that has sparked interest and conversation despite its initial box office performance.
