Local Restaurants Offer Free Thanksgiving Meals Amid Community Need
UPDATE: Local restaurants are stepping up to offer free Thanksgiving meals, addressing urgent community needs as the holiday season approaches. Big Ed’s BBQ in Waukegan, IL, is set to serve complimentary dinners from noon to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Thursday, November 23, 2023, providing a crucial lifeline to those feeling isolated during these challenging times.
As families face uncertainty, Big Ed’s BBQ is introducing a sit-down dinner option for the first time, allowing guests to gather around long tables—a departure from the traditional drive-through service. Owner Ed Nero emphasizes the importance of community connection, stating, “No one should feel alone.” The restaurant plans to serve up to 150 people at a time, where patrons can enjoy turkey, ham, cornbread, and traditional sides while sharing conversations.
Joining the initiative, Juan’s Chuck Wagon will offer free Thanksgiving meals from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the same day, featuring turkey, stuffing, and various pies for all who visit. Michael Coleman of Eleven19 Kitchen & Cocktails will serve meals to the homeless from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a 50% discount for military members and community workers from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Both Nero and Retana, owner of Juan’s Chuck Wagon, have noted a decline in business due to heightened local enforcement actions. They believe these free meals are essential for fostering community recovery. Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham expressed gratitude for these efforts, stating, “Their generosity reminds us what the holiday season is all about.”
The event is supported by over 150 volunteers, ensuring smooth service whether dining in or taking meals home. Guests at Big Ed’s BBQ can choose to eat together or pick up meals to enjoy elsewhere, reflecting a community-first approach that aims to alleviate the isolation many may feel this holiday.
Retana noted the significance of these meals during a tough year, saying, “A lot of people are scared. We want to help the community get back to normal.” This collaborative effort showcases the spirit of gratitude and togetherness that defines the holiday season, making it a pivotal moment for residents of Waukegan and North Chicago.
As the holiday approaches, these restaurants stand as a beacon of hope, offering not just food, but a sense of belonging during a time when it is needed the most. Share this urgent news to let others know about these generous offerings and support your local community this Thanksgiving.
