New Therapeutic Cosmetology School Opens for Survivors in Rochester
The first no-cost, therapeutic cosmetology school dedicated to survivors of sex trafficking and at-risk individuals opened on November 24, 2025, in Sibley Square, Rochester, New York. Miss Julie’s School of Beauty aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for those seeking to rebuild their lives through cosmetology training.
Support and Education for Survivors
This pioneering institution offers programs that not only focus on cosmetology skills but also emphasize trauma-informed job training. The curriculum is designed to empower students by equipping them with practical skills while fostering a healing environment. Additionally, the school aims to educate allies on recognizing signs of sex trafficking, helping to raise awareness and promote community action.
School founder Julie Smith, a seasoned cosmetologist and advocate for survivors, expressed her vision for the school. “Our goal is to create a nurturing space where individuals can learn, heal, and thrive. We believe in the transformative power of beauty and self-care,” she stated during the opening ceremony.
The launch of Miss Julie’s School of Beauty marks a significant milestone in addressing the needs of those affected by sex trafficking. By providing free access to education and resources, the school seeks to bridge the gap for vulnerable populations in the Rochester area.
Community Response and Future Plans
The local community has responded positively to the establishment of the school. The Rochester area has seen a growing need for services that support survivors, and many local organizations are eager to collaborate. The school plans to partner with local support organizations to ensure that students have access to comprehensive resources.
Beyond cosmetology training, the school intends to host workshops and informational sessions for the wider community, aiming to foster understanding and support for survivors. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to combatting sex trafficking and supporting vulnerable individuals.
As Miss Julie’s School of Beauty begins its journey, it stands as a beacon of hope for many in the community, demonstrating that healing and empowerment are possible through education and support. The school is set to open its doors for enrollment in early December, with classes expected to begin shortly thereafter. This innovative approach to education could serve as a model for similar programs across the country, emphasizing the importance of trauma-informed care in vocational training.
