Urgent: Food Pantry Sees 118% Surge in Demand This Thanksgiving
UPDATE: Food pantries in East Harlem are facing an unprecedented surge in demand as families struggle with skyrocketing food prices ahead of Thanksgiving. The NY Common Pantry has reported a staggering 118% increase in registrations for food assistance in the first week of November, highlighting the urgent need for support among local residents.
Long lines stretch around the block outside the pantry, with families eagerly awaiting their Thanksgiving meal distributions. One of those waiting is Elisabeth Negron, who relies on the pantry after losing her food stamp benefits. “The supermarket is no longer an option because the prices have gotten too high,” she said. With turkeys priced between $20 and $30 and milk costing $4, she emphasizes the growing affordability crisis facing many families.
Executive Director Stephen Grimaldi pointed to the impact of the recent government shutdown and delays in SNAP benefits as contributing factors to the rising numbers. “Food is so expensive,” he said. “Groceries have gone up by 33% in the last decade, while wages have not kept pace.” He noted that more working families are turning to food pantries for help as they struggle to afford basic necessities.
Another East Harlem resident, Sonia Gibson, echoed these concerns, saying, “Everything is higher. A pack of wings is $19. I can’t afford wings.” At 66, she is a single grandmother who visits the pantry weekly, referring to it as a “life saver” for her community.
Residents like Negron are grateful for the support as they prepare for a Thanksgiving meal. “I feel great. I got food,” she said after receiving her haul of staples, including rice and beans. She is determined to provide a plentiful Thanksgiving for her family despite the financial challenges.
The sharp rise in demand for food assistance reflects a broader trend as many families face economic hardships. As the holiday season approaches, the urgency for food pantries to meet the growing needs of the community has never been clearer.
What’s next? As the demand continues to rise, community organizations and local authorities are working to secure more resources to support those in need. Residents are encouraged to reach out to local food pantries for assistance and to contribute if they can.
