Minnesota Duluth Surges Past Bemidji State, Wins 77-67
BREAKING: Minnesota Duluth (UMD) staged an incredible comeback, overcoming a double-digit deficit to defeat Bemidji State 77-67 in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener at Romano Gym on November 28, 2023. This victory marks a significant moment for the Bulldogs, who faced early struggles but rallied to secure the win.
The Bulldogs started the game sluggishly, hitting only 2 of their first 10 shots, allowing the Beavers to build an early 12-6 lead. Bemidji State extended their advantage to 23-13 following back-to-back three-pointers from Dominic Fairbanks, prompting UMD to call a timeout. Just when it seemed like the Bulldogs were in trouble, they ignited a fierce response.
With a pivotal 13-1 run led by top scorers Caleb Siwek and Kole Hanson, UMD clawed back to within a single point at 27-26 with just five minutes remaining in the first half. UMD finished strong, taking a 35-32 lead into halftime after Owen Leach’s four free throws. Hanson was the standout in the first half, contributing 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting.
Despite a shaky start, the Bulldogs regrouped and showcased grit. The teams exchanged leads multiple times in the second half before UMD took a decisive lead at 46-45, courtesy of a layup from Mattie Thompson. Following a tie at 48, the Bulldogs unleashed a 10-0 scoring run, highlighted by a crucial three-pointer from Thompson, pushing the score to 58-48.
The Beavers fought valiantly, narrowing the gap to 66-60 with just five minutes left. However, UMD swiftly regained control, executing an 11-4 run to seal the game. Siwek led all scorers with an impressive 23 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the field. Hanson and Thompson also contributed significantly, adding 15 and 14 points, respectively.
In a dominant performance on the boards, UMD out-rebounded Bemidji State 45-32, with Thompson and Nick Katona each grabbing eight rebounds. This victory elevates UMD’s record to 5-1 as they prepare for their next challenge: a nonconference matchup against Northern Michigan in Marquette, Michigan, on Saturday, December 2, 2023.
This thrilling victory not only highlights UMD’s resilience but also sets the stage for an exciting season ahead. Fans are eager to see if the Bulldogs can maintain their momentum in the upcoming games. Keep an eye on their progress as they aim for continued success!
