Urgent: Experts Warn of Seasonal Affective Disorder Rise This Winter
URGENT UPDATE: As shorter days and reduced sunlight approach, health experts are sounding the alarm on the rising risks of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This condition, often referred to as winter depression, significantly impacts approximately 5% of adults, particularly during the fall and winter months.
In a recent statement, Sarah Esparza, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist at Kaiser Permanente Fresno, emphasized the emotional toll that the changing seasons can bring. “The overwhelm, the disruption of schedules, it’s that kind of recipe for struggle and a difficult time,” Esparza noted, highlighting the urgency for awareness as the days grow shorter.
Healthcare professionals warn that individuals already grappling with mental health issues may find their symptoms exacerbated. “Things that usually help manage anxiety or depression become less accessible due to the darkness setting in sooner,” Esparza explained. This critical situation calls for proactive measures as we enter the colder months.
Experts recommend several strategies to combat the effects of SAD. Increasing intake of Vitamin D and utilizing light therapy are effective methods to elevate mood. However, Esparza stresses that maintaining a structured routine is equally vital. “Trying to still do all the things that they’ve done throughout the rest of the year is crucial,” she advised. Regular physical activity and getting outside during daylight hours are essential to mitigate symptoms.
Human connection also plays a pivotal role in mental well-being. “Interaction with friends and family can boost those chemicals that relationally feel impactful for us,” Esparza said. Engaging socially can provide much-needed support during these challenging months.
