Nanticoke Area Hosts Holiday Fundraisers and Community Events
The Nanticoke area is gearing up for an exciting holiday season with a series of community events and fundraisers designed to bring residents together. Starting from November 29, 2025, the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church will hold its annual Christmas fundraiser, featuring a food sale with homemade delicacies and gently used holiday items available for purchase.
Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, located at 240 Center St., Nanticoke, will host the fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, November 29 and December 6. Attendees can enjoy traditional dishes such as pierogis with butter and onions, clam chowder, haluski, whimpies, and potato pancakes, all available for dine-in or takeout. In addition to food, the event will offer a variety of gently used Christmas decorations, including trees, lights, ornaments, and toys. A basket raffle will also take place, with tickets priced at $5 for 11 chances.
Community Events and Gatherings
The festivities continue with a Hunters Breakfast hosted by the Glen Lyon Legion on Sunday, November 30. This early morning event will run from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 539 Hall, located at 62 Newport St., Glen Lyon. The breakfast, which costs $15 per person, includes a hearty meal of scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon, sausage, buttered biscuits, sausage gravy, and baked goods, catered by TND Deserts and More. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 570-592-4251.
On the same day, the Newport Township will celebrate its annual Christmas tree lighting from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Wanamie Municipal Building. Families can participate in children’s crafts, enjoy cookies and hot chocolate, and join in caroling. Food trucks will be on-site, and Santa Claus will make a festive entrance on a fire truck, ready to hear children’s Christmas wishes.
For those looking to engage in friendly competition, the West Side Playground will host bi-monthly bingo sessions. Doors open at 5 p.m., with games commencing at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The next bingo night is scheduled for December 2 at the association’s hall, located at 389 W. Grand St., Nanticoke. Participants can enjoy food, refreshments, and door prizes.
The American Legion will also hold bingo every second Wednesday of the month, with the next event set for December 10. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and games will start at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post 350, located at 23 W. Broad St., Nanticoke. The kitchen will be open from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for those wishing to enjoy a meal during the games.
Food Distribution Services
In addition to the holiday festivities, the Newport Township Community Organization and the Weinberg Regional Food Bank will conduct a monthly food distribution. This drive-through service takes place from 11 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at the municipal garage adjacent to the municipal building on Kirmar Parkway. The distribution is organized with the cooperation of the Newport Township Board of Commissioners and Township Manager Joe Hillan. When the garage is unavailable, the distribution will occur at the Wanamie Recreation Park parking lot.
All food recipients must pre-register at least five days prior to the event by calling 570-592-7876.
These events not only highlight the spirit of community engagement but also provide residents with opportunities to connect and celebrate the holiday season together.
