Granite City Lumberjacks Dominate Willmar WarHawks in 5-3 Victory
The Granite City Lumberjacks secured a decisive 5-3 victory over the Willmar WarHawks on March 15, 2024, at the Miller Buick GMC Rink in Sauk Rapids. With this win, the Lumberjacks improved their record to an impressive 17 wins and 2 losses in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) West Division, solidifying their position as a top contender.
Willmar initially took control of the game, with defenseman Dylan Mees scoring at 10:21 in the first period. This marked Mees’ third goal with the WarHawks and his fourth of the season, following a stint with the West Bend Power in Wisconsin. However, the lead was fleeting as Granite City quickly retaliated.
The Lumberjacks responded with five consecutive goals, beginning with Garrett Plaude‘s 11th goal of the season just 1 minute and 40 seconds into the first period. This shift in momentum showcased Granite City’s offensive prowess, overwhelming the WarHawks’ defense.
Third Period Surge by Willmar
Although Granite City maintained control for most of the match, the WarHawks rallied in the third period. Goals from Gabe Adams and Carson Wendorff provided a late surge. Adams, a center from Bellevue, Nebraska, and Wendorff, who plays both defense and forward from Litchfield, each capitalized on scoring opportunities, but ultimately, it was not enough to secure a comeback.
The final score reflected the Lumberjacks’ dominance, with Granite City netting five goals compared to Willmar’s three. The game highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams, particularly in the face of Granite City’s strong record.
Game Statistics and Next Steps
Throughout the match, the statistics illustrated a balanced performance by both teams. Willmar’s goalie Sam Moen faced 37 shots, making 32 saves, while Granite City’s Nathan Mch saved 15 out of 18 shots. The game’s flow was punctuated by several penalties, adding intensity to the contest.
The WarHawks will look to bounce back in their next game, scheduled for 19:10 on March 17, 2024, against the Alexandria Blizzard at the Willmar Civic Center Arena. This upcoming matchup presents an opportunity for Willmar to regain momentum and improve their season record, currently standing at 7 wins and 11 losses.
Granite City continues to showcase their strength in the NA3HL, and as the season progresses, they remain a formidable force in the league.
