Albin J. Ripka, Influential Accountant and Farmer, Passes Away at 84

Albin J. “Joe” Ripka, an influential figure in both the accounting and agricultural sectors, passed away on November 26, 2025, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was 84 years old.

Born on October 18, 1941, in South Deerfield, Joe Ripka was the son of Albin and Caroline I. (Kozlowski) Ripka. He spent his formative years in the same town, graduating from Deerfield Academy in 1960 before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Babson College in 1963.

Career Highlights and Innovations

Ripka began his career as an industrial accountant, dedicating 14 years to prominent companies such as Ford Motor Company, General Electric, Hamilton Standard, Ingersoll Rand, and Standex International Company. In 1977, he established the A.J. Ripka Tax Accounting Business, marking the beginning of a successful venture in tax services.

In addition to his accounting career, Ripka took over his family farm, where he became known for his exceptional small-fruit production. He was among the pioneers of commercial raspberry production in the 1970s and introduced innovative agricultural techniques to the region. His methods for cultivating sweet strawberries involved meticulously adjusting soil acidity and incorporating micronutrients.

Ripka also made significant contributions by introducing Silver Queen sweet corn and seedless watermelons to the local agricultural landscape. His passion for farming and innovation left a lasting impact on the community.

Family and Community Impact

Ripka is survived by his wife, Judith Neidl, his daughter, Michelle Regish, of Hadley, and his son, Joseph Ripka, and daughter-in-law, Jodi, of South Hadley. He also leaves behind a sister, Georgianna Swinerton, and a grandson, Lucas. Additionally, he is remembered by four stepchildren—Skip, John, Robert, and Kimberly Sobieski—and their spouses and step-grandchildren, including Amelia, Summer, Faythe, Kaz, Kalia, Hayden, Mae, Evie, and Rogan, as well as a niece, Stepanie Goodwin, and a nephew, Geoffrey Swinerton.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, December 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by an in-house service at 11:00 a.m. at the Wrisley Funeral Home, located at 90 Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield.
