Chicago Bears Explore New Stadium Options Beyond Illinois

The Chicago Bears are considering relocating their stadium plans outside of Illinois, as legislative hurdles continue to obstruct their efforts. The announcement comes from team President and CEO Kevin Warren, who issued a pointed message to Illinois lawmakers regarding the challenges faced during negotiations. In an open letter, Warren outlined the team’s commitment to investing over $2 billion in a new facility while expressing frustration over the lack of legislative support.

As the Bears prepare for critical games in a promising season, currently leading the NFC North division, the urgency for a new stadium has intensified. Warren emphasized the need for a “world-class” venue to match the aspirations of the franchise and its passionate fanbase. “With two regular season home games remaining, we are focused on building a championship organization worthy of you,” he wrote.

The Bears initially set their sights on constructing a stadium in Arlington Heights, viewing it as the best option in Cook County. However, Warren noted that prolonged uncertainty regarding state financial support has compelled the team to reassess their options, including potential sites in northwest Indiana.

Warren recounted the Bears’ attempts to engage with Illinois leaders over the past several years, affirming their readiness to make a substantial investment without seeking taxpayer funds for the stadium itself. The team sought only essential commitments for local infrastructure and reasonable property tax assurances, but faced consistent delays in legislative partnership.

“In the past, we have worked in good faith with Illinois leaders and made clear our commitment to this project,” Warren stated. “Yet our efforts have been met with no legislative partnership.” He stressed that the proposed stadium would not only create thousands of jobs but also provide year-round entertainment options and significant revenue for the state.

A spokesperson for Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker responded to the Bears’ potential move, describing it as a “startling slap in the face” to loyal fans. The spokesperson acknowledged the governor’s support for keeping the team in Chicago, while also noting that the Bears, as a private business, have the autonomy to make their own decisions.

The letter from Warren elucidated the stakes involved for Illinois: “For a project of this scale, uncertainty has significant consequences,” he stated. He highlighted the need for stable timelines and proactive legislative support to facilitate a successful partnership, which has been lacking thus far.
