British virtual band Gorillaz made their highly anticipated debut as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on March 30, 2024. The group performed two songs highlighting their diverse musical evolution. They opened with “Clint Eastwood,” the lead single from their self-titled debut album released in 2001. This track, which Rolling Stone ranked as the 38th best song of the 2000s, draws inspiration from the classic film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, in which Clint Eastwood starred. The performance featured Del the Funky Homosapien, who delivered the rap verses alongside the band.

Following this nostalgic hit, Gorillaz showcased “The Moon Cave,” a song from their latest album, The Mountain, released in 2023. This album serves as a follow-up to Cracker Island, and features a range of collaborations. On stage, Gorillaz were joined by singer-songwriter Asha Puthli, rapper Black Thought, and renowned sitar player Anoushka Shankar. Notably, the album includes contributions from artists such as Bobby Womack and Dave Jolicoeur of De La Soul, with some tracks featuring these artists posthumously.

Exploring Themes of Loss and Collaboration

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, lead vocalist Damon Albarn discussed the thematic depth of “The Moon Cave.” He stated, “I just thought, if we’re going to talk about the subject of death, I need some people who are dead to help me talk about it.” This sentiment underscores the album’s exploration of personal loss and its creative process, which was shaped by both individual experiences and a transformative journey to India.

The album, which comprises fifteen tracks, incorporates Indian classical instrumentation and features lyrics in multiple languages, including Hindi. Other notable tracks include “The Manifesto” and “Damascus,” each enriched by various contributors. The blend of cultural influences and collaborative efforts reflects the band’s commitment to innovation and artistic expression.

Upcoming Tour and Festival Appearances

Gorillaz will embark on The Mountain tour later this month, beginning in the United Kingdom. As part of their tour schedule, they are set to headline Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona in June and Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta in September. This tour will likely further showcase the band’s unique sound and collaborative spirit, as they connect with fans around the world.

As Gorillaz continues to push creative boundaries, their SNL performance marks both a celebration of their past and a glimpse into their evolving future, solidifying their place in contemporary music.
