‘Landman’ Star Paulina Chavez Discusses Ariana and Cooper’s Breakup
In the latest episode of the acclaimed series Landman, which aired on November 16, 2023, fans were taken by surprise as Ariana, portrayed by Paulina Chavez, ended her relationship with Cooper, played by Jacob Lofland. The emotional climax unfolded after Ariana experienced a distressing moment when Cooper’s phone died while he was at work, triggering her concerns for his safety. Haunted by the loss of her late husband, Elvio, Ariana decided to prioritize her emotional wellbeing, stating she could not endure another heartbreak.
Following this pivotal moment, Cooper struggled with the decision but ultimately accepted Ariana’s choice. In an insightful discussion with Tommy Norris, portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton, Cooper contemplated potential ways to restore their relationship, hinting at the possibility of a future reconciliation.
Chavez spoke exclusively to Us Weekly, sharing her understanding of Ariana’s motivations behind the breakup. “I really think she was, obviously, taken aback. The stakes are so much higher now,” she explained. Ariana grapples with the risks involved in Cooper’s work within the oil industry and wishes to avoid repeating the traumatic cycle of loss. As she navigates her feelings, she remains considerate of Cooper’s needs as well.
“I want [Cooper] to be happy and do what he wants,” Chavez remarked. “If that means us breaking up, then that’s what needs to happen.” While recognizing the gravity of the situation, she expressed hope that the beloved couple could ultimately find their way back to each other.
Chavez described Cooper and Ariana’s relationship as one that resonates with many viewers—a connection where both partners are unafraid to express their truths and strive for improvement. “I’m a hopeless romantic, so I’m definitely in it with their relationship,” she said, conveying her desire for them to unite again. “Please, they need to end up together; I’m rooting for them, too.”
This season has challenged Chavez to delve deeper into her character, who is depicted as “stronger, bolder and more unapologetically herself.” The narrative will reveal more facets of Ariana as she embarks on a new phase of motherhood and explores her own desires within her relationship with Cooper.
Chavez views her portrayal of Ariana as a tribute to Latina women and mothers navigating love and loss. Although she is not a mother herself, she draws from her sister’s experiences with motherhood, having assisted her during the night shifts with her newborn son. “It’s been like a tradition that I just go out and help [my sister],” she shared. “This performance is just a love letter to Latina women and mothers, especially those who might be widows and are experiencing new love; it’s really scary navigating that.”
New episodes of Landman are available for streaming on Paramount+ every Sunday at 03:00 ET. As the series unfolds, viewers can expect to witness the complexities of love and loss, as well as the resilience of its characters.
