The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia has reached a significant milestone in its construction journey. On October 31, 2025, the first part of the cross was placed atop the Tower of Jesus Christ, marking the commencement of the final phase of this iconic structure’s development. With the addition of the lower arm, the tower now stands at a height of 162.91 meters.

Construction Milestone for the Iconic Tower

The lower arm of the cross, measuring 7.25 meters and weighing 24 tons, was meticulously positioned on the summit of the tower. The cross was delivered last July in four separate panels, which were subsequently assembled on a work platform located 54 meters above the main nave. This assembly included glazing, stonework, and interior finishing.

Designed with a unique double-twist geometry, the cross transitions elegantly from a square base to an octagonal upper section. Its exterior features a blend of white glazed ceramic and glass, materials selected for their luminosity and durability against various weather conditions. Once fully assembled, the cross will reach a height of 17 meters, with a width of 13.5 meters, approximately the height of a five-story building.

Significance of the Tower and Upcoming Inauguration

The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ is not merely an architectural achievement but a symbolic representation of Antoni Gaudí‘s vision for the Sagrada Familia. This tower stands as the tallest among the central group, embodying the spiritual ascent towards light that Gaudí envisioned.

The inauguration of the tower is scheduled for June 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. In anticipation of this event, the Sagrada Familia plans to host a series of special events and public celebrations.
