Santa Claus is making a difference this holiday season by posing with pets of all kinds. Dave Riley, known as the Real Pet Santa, engages not only with dogs but also with horses, turtles, and even an emu, bringing smiles to both pets and their owners while supporting animal welfare organizations. Since partnering with Last Chance Ranch in Richland Township in 2022, Riley has raised nearly $3,000 for the rescue through various events.

Riley’s dedication to animals has earned him praise from Last Chance Ranch Executive Director Jackie Burke. “Dave goes above and beyond,” Burke said. “He works with so many animal rescues and makes each and every one of us feel the true spirit of the season of giving.” His commitment to the cause is evident in his tireless efforts at events where he takes photos with pets and their owners, with all proceeds benefiting the rescue.

Riley estimates that he has raised thousands of dollars for various animal rescues. His journey began nearly 25 years ago after a serious motorcycle accident left him with time to bond with his newly adopted puppy, Rose. Through this experience, he developed a deep understanding of animal behavior, learning to communicate with them effectively. His passion eventually led to fostering dogs and volunteering at local shelters, paving the way for the creation of the Real Pet Santa project.

Creating Joy Through Unique Photo Opportunities

Riley’s initiative started with humble beginnings at farmers’ markets and craft shows. His reputation grew quickly, and he soon began collaborating with Last Chance Ranch, where their first event together in 2022 was a resounding success. “It went so very well,” he recalled, leading to more opportunities to connect with the community.

Riley’s former spouse, Marcy Riley, joins him as Mrs. Claus during these photo events, where they create memorable experiences for families. Riley has a particular fondness for large dogs, currently owning two Bernese mountain dogs named Zerra and Phoebe, but he welcomes all pets. “Anyone with any type of pet is our audience,” he said, highlighting that no animal is too unusual for a photo opportunity. “Last Chance Ranch had an emu named Elmo, and he was awesome. You name it, I’ll sit with it.”

The compassion Riley shows extends beyond just taking pictures. Burke recounted a touching moment when Riley offered to visit a senior horse that refused to load onto a trailer to have its photo taken. “Dave was willing to schedule a visit to her farm to take photos that would be cherished forever,” she said.

Upcoming Events and Community Impact

Riley’s passion for animals and his commitment to providing joyful experiences culminate in several upcoming events. The Real Pet Santa will appear at Art Fusion in Whitehall Township on November 22, 2023, from 10:00 to 14:00. The cost for families is $10, with proceeds benefiting Last Chance Ranch. Another event, “Sangria Sunday with Santa,” is scheduled for November 23, 2023, from 12:00 to 16:00 at Black River Farms. This event will support Tails of Valor.

Riley’s unique approach to spreading holiday cheer adds a special touch to the season, ensuring that every pet, regardless of size or species, has the chance to be part of the festivities. His story is a reminder of the joy animals bring into our lives and the importance of supporting their welfare. As he continues to engage with pets and their families, Riley embodies the spirit of giving, proving that the holiday season is for everyone—furry friends included.
