Scott Cooper’s ‘Springsteen’ Offers Unique Character Study

Scott Cooper’s latest film, “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” defies the conventional music biopic format, focusing instead on a deep character study of rock legend Bruce Springsteen. The film, inspired by the book of the same name by Warren Zanes, delves into a pivotal moment in Springsteen’s life during the early 1980s, specifically his creative journey while producing the acclaimed acoustic album, Nebraska.
Rather than chronicling the entirety of Springsteen’s illustrious career or showcasing his chart-topping hits, Cooper’s narrative centers on the artist’s introspection and emotional turmoil. The film portrays Springsteen grappling with his past, including a complex relationship with his father, an alcoholic, and his experiences with love and loss. This approach echoes themes from Cooper’s Oscar-winning debut, “Crazy Heart,” emphasizing the personal struggles that often fuel artistic expression.
The role of Springsteen is played by Jeremy Allen White, known for his performance in “The Bear.” White embodies the musician with a mix of physicality and emotional depth, donning leather jackets and flannels that evoke Springsteen’s iconic style. While he may not mirror Springsteen’s appearance perfectly, White captures the essence of the artist, particularly his compelling gaze and distinctive vocal style, performing the songs authentically.
Exploring the Creative Process
Cooper aims to illustrate the isolating nature of creativity through the lens of Springsteen’s experiences. In late 1981, Springsteen is depicted retreating from the spotlight after a grueling tour, seeking solace in his hometown of Colts Neck, New Jersey. His attempts to reconnect with his roots lead him to the local rock venue, The Stone Pony, and a fleeting romance with a fan named Faye, played by Odessa Young.
The film uses visual storytelling techniques, such as childhood flashbacks and nostalgic drives through familiar landscapes, to convey Springsteen’s emotional state. These moments are juxtaposed with scenes showcasing his songwriting process. He immerses himself in literature, including works by Flannery O’Connor, and explores the haunting history of Charles Starkweather, a figure who influenced the themes of “Nebraska.” This blend of memory and imagination serves to enrich the narrative, revealing the complex interplay between life experiences and artistic output.
While the film effectively highlights the creative struggle, it also encounters familiar challenges associated with biopics. Certain tropes, such as the protagonist reflecting on past influences, may feel predictable. Despite this, the depiction of Springsteen’s songwriting sessions—recorded in his bedroom using a basic 4-track recorder—adds a layer of authenticity. The meticulous effort to capture the raw sound of “Nebraska” showcases the artist’s dedication, even in the face of skepticism from his engineer Chuck Plotkin and manager Jon Landau.
A Mixed Journey
Despite its strengths, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” loses momentum toward the film’s conclusion. The narrative meanders into a darker phase of Springsteen’s life, resulting in a pacing that feels aimless at times. Cooper forgoes grand musical moments, choosing instead to convey emotional highs through subtle interactions, such as backstage hugs or intimate rehearsals.
The film offers a contemplative exploration of an artist’s psyche, presenting a version of Springsteen that is more introspective than triumphant. While it may not resonate with every viewer, it provides a thought-provoking perspective on the challenges faced by musicians as they navigate their personal and creative lives.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” carries a PG-13 rating and is currently screening at locations including the AMC Boston Common, among other theaters. It invites audiences to engage with the quieter, more reflective aspects of a rock star’s journey, ultimately challenging the conventions of how music legends are portrayed on screen.
