Stellan Skarsgård Poised for Historic Oscar Nomination with New Film
Stellan Skarsgård may be on the verge of making history at the Academy Awards with his performance in the upcoming film Sentimental Value. Currently anticipated for a Best Supporting Actor nomination, Skarsgård’s recognition would mark a groundbreaking moment for the Oscars, as it would be the first time a performance from a non-English language film produced outside the United States has been nominated in this category.
Sentimental Value, also known as Affeksjonsverdi, premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, receiving significant critical acclaim. Directed by Joachim Trier, the film tells the story of Gustav, played by Skarsgård, who navigates a strained relationship with his two daughters, Nora and Agnes, portrayed by Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, respectively. The narrative also features Elle Fanning as Rachel Kemp, a young Hollywood star who develops a unique bond with Gustav.
The Academy Awards introduced the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories in 1936. While international films have been recognized in the Best Supporting Actress category, the Best Supporting Actor category has yet to see a nomination from a non-English language film. If Skarsgård receives a nomination, it will not only highlight his outstanding performance but also represent a significant shift in the Academy’s recognition of global cinema.
The announcement of the nominees will occur on January 22, 2026. As the awards season approaches, anticipation builds for Skarsgård’s potential recognition and what it could mean for the future of international films in prestigious award categories.
Sentimental Value is set to be released in the United States on December 26, 2025, following its festival circuit. With its critical acclaim and the strong possibility of Skarsgård’s nomination, the film is generating considerable buzz within the film community, potentially reshaping perceptions of international contributions to the cinematic landscape.
