Syracuse Reporter Mary Kielar Moves to Las Vegas for New Role
A notable change is occurring in Central New York’s media landscape as investigative reporter Mary Kielar departs from CNY Central after nearly a decade. Kielar announced on social media that she will be relocating to Las Vegas to join the team at KTNV, ABC13, as a Senior Reporter starting in January 2024. This move marks a significant step in her career, allowing her to continue her commitment to investigative journalism.
In her announcement on Facebook, Kielar expressed immense gratitude for her time in Syracuse. She described her nine years in the region as “incredible” and hinted at sharing more details about her future endeavors in the coming weeks. Her journey in journalism began after graduating from Ithaca College in 2015, having previously attended Webster Schroeder High School near Rochester. Before joining CNY Central in 2016, Kielar gained experience at Lakeland Public Television, a PBS affiliate in Bemidji, Minnesota.
Impact on the Syracuse Community
Kielar’s contributions to CNY Central, particularly through the investigative I-Team, have left a lasting impression. The I-Team, launched in 2022, was a collaboration with fellow journalist Matt Mulcahy. CNY Central’s news director, Sean Carroll, praised Kielar for her dedication to giving “a voice to the voiceless,” emphasizing the significant impact she has made within the community.
Carroll noted, “Mary Kielar is the perfect example of the difference a passionate, talented, & relentless investigative journalist can make in a community.” He acknowledged her genuine care for people and her commitment to enriching local lives through storytelling and journalism. Carroll also mentioned that while the I-Team will continue with Mulcahy and additional reporters, “replacing” Kielar is a challenge that cannot be met.
Kielar’s transition to KTNV not only highlights her individual achievements but also reflects the broader trends in the media industry, where talented journalists are often sought after for new opportunities. KTNV, owned by the Scripps Company, offers a platform where Kielar can further her investigative work and continue to inform the public on important issues.
As Kielar embarks on this new chapter in Las Vegas, her legacy in Syracuse remains strong. The community will undoubtedly miss her relentless pursuit of truth and ability to shine a light on critical stories.
