California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly criticized President Donald Trump during a press conference on insulin pricing, highlighting what he perceives as the president’s declining health. Newsom’s remarks came amidst discussions about California Attorney General Rob Bonta challenging Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to San Francisco without an apparent justification.

During the press conference on July 6, 2023, Newsom stated that Trump no longer required a “pretext” to undertake what he considers “illegal acts.” He expressed concern over the president’s cognitive state, questioning, “There’s no existing protest at a federal building. There’s no operation that’s being impeded. I guess it’s just a training ground for the president of the United States.” Newsom described the deployment as “grossly illegal” and “immoral,” suggesting that it reflects a disconnect from reality.

Newsom’s comments followed Trump’s assertion that dangerous cities should serve as military training grounds. The California governor characterized Trump’s behavior as increasingly “unhinged” and “listless,” implying that the president may need intervention for both cognitive and physical issues. He stated, “Dare I say, perhaps unfairly, physically [he is] in decline,” reinforcing his point that Trump’s recent actions seem indicative of someone requiring help.

Following Trump’s description of San Francisco as “a mess,” Newsom pointed out that he held the governorship during a time when the city was considered one of the “great cities” just 15 years ago. The Governor’s Press Office took to social media to mock Trump, using his style of communication to highlight the president’s weight and suggest he consider Ozempic, a medication for weight loss. “ALSO, OZEMPIC IS NEXT FOR ‘THE BIG ONES’ LIKE TRUMP! SLIM DOWN, DONNY!” the post read.

Trump, who often refers to weight loss medications, previously claimed that Ozempic’s price would decrease significantly during his presidency. In a recent interaction, he remarked, “I was referring to Ozempic, or—I was referring to—the fat loss drug?… They’ll be much lower.” His mixed statements about the drug have been met with skepticism, particularly regarding its effectiveness.

Despite the criticisms, Trump’s personal physician, Sean Barbabella, recently affirmed the president’s health. Following a routine medical examination, Barbabella declared Trump to be in “excellent overall health,” noting that his cardiac age was approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age. The assessment indicated that the president continues to maintain a demanding daily schedule and exhibits strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance.

Trump’s weight was recorded at 224 pounds during his recent health check, with cognitive function assessed at a score of 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Nonetheless, the president has been dealing with ongoing issues, including bruising on his hands and swollen ankles. In July, the White House disclosed that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition among seniors that leads to blood pooling in the legs due to damaged veins.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Newsom’s pointed remarks about Trump’s health and actions reflect broader tensions surrounding the president’s fitness for office and the implications of his decisions on national security. The ongoing dialogue surrounding these issues will likely remain a focal point as the political climate intensifies ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
