New Orleans Enhances Vaccine Access for Flu and COVID-19 Season

As flu season approaches, New Orleans is taking significant steps to improve access to vaccines for both influenza and COVID-19. The New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) has announced a comprehensive strategy to ensure that residents can easily obtain vaccinations, reflecting a commitment to public health as the 2025-2026 season unfolds. This initiative aims to protect individuals, especially those in high-risk categories, as the colder months set in.
Expanded Vaccine Availability
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that influenza vaccinations are now available for anyone aged six months and older. Furthermore, as of yesterday, the CDC included COVID-19 vaccinations in the recommended immunization schedule for the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of vaccination for adults and vulnerable populations. Additional vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pneumonia, and shingles are also being recommended.
Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Health Director of the NOHD, highlighted the significance of these recommendations. She stated, “These updated recommendations make it easier for everyone to protect themselves and their families from flu and COVID-19,” underscoring the department’s dedication to enhancing community health.
The vaccines are largely free and deemed safe for most individuals, alleviating financial concerns for many residents of New Orleans. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the public can access necessary health measures without financial burden.
Convenience at Walgreens
Pharmacy chain Walgreens is playing a pivotal role in the immunization efforts, offering the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines to eligible individuals aged three and older without requiring a prescription. Brian Strong, Director of Immunizations at Walgreens, stated, “Walgreens is proud to offer the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines in Louisiana to eligible individuals.” This accessibility aims to encourage more residents to receive their vaccinations.
To streamline the process, Walgreens has introduced multiple avenues for obtaining vaccines. Residents can walk into any Walgreens pharmacy, schedule appointments online, or utilize their mobile app. In addition, individuals can access the service by texting or calling a dedicated hotline.
In line with CDC guidelines, adults are encouraged to consult with healthcare professionals to determine if the COVID-19 vaccine is suitable for them. Parents of children under 18 are advised to contact their pediatrician or pharmacy for personalized guidance. Importantly, the NOHD has confirmed that prescriptions are no longer necessary to receive COVID-19 vaccines at pharmacies or vaccination events, simplifying access for all.
For those concerned about potential costs, insurance coverage is expected to continue mitigating out-of-pocket expenses, ensuring that financial barriers do not impede vaccination efforts. As New Orleans prepares for the upcoming flu and COVID-19 season, the city’s extensive vaccine accessibility initiatives reflect a robust commitment to public health and community safety.
