Ohio Governor Proposes Emergency Ban on Synthetic Kratom
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has called for an immediate emergency rule to classify all synthetic kratom compounds as illegal drugs. This directive, announced on September 28, 2023, is aimed at addressing growing concerns regarding the safety and legality of synthetic versions of the herbal substance known as kratom.
The proposal seeks to empower the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to act swiftly in designating these compounds as illegal, thereby enhancing the state’s ability to regulate substances that have raised health alarms. Synthetic kratom, often marketed as a legal alternative to the natural product, has been linked to various health risks, including addiction and severe side effects.
Health Risks and Regulatory Action
Governor DeWine highlighted the importance of this action, stating that synthetic kratom poses significant health threats to the public. Reports from health officials indicate that these synthetic compounds may not only be less safe than traditional kratom but can also lead to dangerous consequences for users.
According to the Ohio Department of Health, there has been a noticeable increase in emergency room visits related to kratom usage, particularly its synthetic forms. Data from the previous year showed a sharp rise in incidents, prompting the need for immediate regulatory changes.
In his announcement, DeWine emphasized that consumer protection is a top priority. “We must take proactive measures to ensure the safety of our residents,” he stated. His administration is advocating for a comprehensive approach to address the risks associated with these substances.
Next Steps for Implementation
The proposed emergency rule will be presented at the next meeting of the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. If approved, it will take effect immediately, allowing the state to prohibit the sale and distribution of synthetic kratom across Ohio.
Support for the governor’s initiative has been voiced by various health organizations and advocacy groups who argue that the dangers of synthetic kratom far outweigh any potential benefits. The urgency of the situation has mobilized stakeholders to push for swift action in the regulatory process.
As Ohio moves forward with this proposal, it joins a growing number of states reevaluating their stance on kratom amid rising health concerns. The outcome of the Board of Pharmacy’s meeting will be closely monitored by both supporters and opponents of the ban, marking a pivotal moment in Ohio’s approach to drug regulation.
