Remembering Bill Whiting: A Life of Love and Service

William (Bill) Whiting, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 77. His death was due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease, which he had been battling since his diagnosis in 2019. Bill is survived by his wife, Kate, his sister Maggie, his niece Stacie, her husband Loren, and their two sons, Jack and Luke. He is also remembered fondly by his cousin, Jeanette, and her family, who reside in Massachusetts.

Bill was born on August 9, 1948, in Pennsylvania. He relocated to California many years ago, ultimately settling in Santa Cruz around 1993. Following his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Bill managed to stay at home for about four years, thanks in large part to the dedicated care provided by Lupe, his caregiver. Her support allowed him to maintain a sense of independence longer than might have otherwise been possible.

Support and Care in Challenging Times

After experiencing several falls, Bill transitioned to Westwind Memory Care in Santa Cruz. His family expressed immense gratitude for the compassionate care he received there. The staff at Westwind ensured that he lived his remaining years in comfort and dignity. Bill’s friends, including Andy Pereira, Gene Stymiest, Dan Strom, and Dave Witteveen, frequently visited him at the facility, creating cherished memories, including heartwarming videos of their time together.

Before his retirement, Bill worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor, providing vital counseling and vocational services to individuals with disabilities. His career was marked by a commitment to helping others, a legacy that his family and friends continue to honor. He and Kate lived on several acres in Bonny Doon, California, where he enjoyed the beauty of nature alongside their dogs.

A Life Well-Lived

Bill was an avid sailor, embarking on numerous trips in the Caribbean with his long-time friend and Penn State fraternity brother, Jim Diebold. The sailing adventures remained some of his fondest memories, showcasing his love for exploration and camaraderie.

Kate and her family provided significant support during Bill’s six-year journey with dementia. Friends rallied around Bill, with many offering their assistance to Kate during this challenging time. A poignant video emerged from this period, capturing the moment when Dan played “Happy Birthday” on harmonica for Bill, encapsulating the joy and love that surrounded him.

Bill Whiting’s life is celebrated not only for his professional contributions but also for the deep connections he forged with family and friends. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him. As a cherished husband, father, and friend, Bill’s legacy of love and service endures.
