Stephen Rice Ward, Activist and Advocate, Passes at 78
Stephen Rice Ward, a dedicated activist and advocate for democracy and environmental preservation, passed away on November 14, 2025, following a two-year battle with cancer. He chose to end his life on his own terms, surrounded by loved ones, including his partner of 35 years, Stephanie Leaf.
Born on April 21, 1947, in San Francisco, Ward grew up primarily in the affluent communities of Tiburon and Belvedere. His journey took him across various locations in the western United States, spending over three decades in Quincy, California. In the final five years of his life, he resided in Larkspur within Marin County, where he continued to engage in community and environmental initiatives.
Ward’s life was characterized by his commitment to social and ecological causes. He was known for encouraging those around him to take active roles in preserving democracy and advocating for the natural world. Friends and family remember him not only for his activism but also for his deep compassion and unwavering support for others.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Ward’s memory are encouraged to plant a living memorial or support local environmental organizations. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations to continue the fight for a more just and sustainable world.
