UAA Appoints Dr. Jay Butler as New Dean of College of Health
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has appointed Dr. Jay Butler as the new dean of its College of Health, effective December 28, 2025. Dr. Butler, a prominent figure in the field of infectious diseases, will bring a wealth of experience to this leadership role, having previously served as the deputy director for infectious diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Dr. Butler’s extensive background includes significant positions within state, federal, and tribal health organizations. He spent six years at the CDC, where he played a crucial role in shaping public health policy and response strategies. Prior to his tenure at the CDC, he served as Alaska’s chief medical officer and was the chief of the Alaska Division of Public Health’s epidemiology section. His leadership experience also extends to directing the CDC’s Arctic Investigations Program and serving as senior director of community health services for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
In a statement regarding Dr. Butler’s appointment, Denise Runge, UAA Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, expressed confidence in his capabilities. “Dr. Butler joins UAA at an exciting time for our university,” Runge stated. “His leadership and commitment to Alaska will be instrumental in strengthening UAA’s position as the state’s designated health university. We are thrilled to welcome him into a role supported by a strong team of faculty, staff and leaders within the College of Health.”
Dr. Butler has also contributed to UAA as an affiliate professor for 16 years, further solidifying his connection to the university and its mission. His appointment comes as UAA continues to expand its health programs and adapt to the evolving needs of the community, particularly in light of recent public health challenges.
The College of Health is poised for growth as it seeks to address pressing health concerns in Alaska and beyond. Dr. Butler’s expertise in infectious diseases will be invaluable, especially in enhancing the university’s research capabilities and community outreach efforts.
As he prepares to assume his new role, Dr. Butler’s appointment represents a significant step forward for UAA, marking a commitment to advancing health education and research in the state. His leadership is expected to foster collaboration among various health sectors, further benefiting the Alaskan community.
