The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a significant recall of seafood products produced by New Hoque & Sons Inc. in Maspeth, New York. The recall involves packages of “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” that were found to contain internal organs, posing serious health risks to consumers. This violation raises concerns regarding food safety and the potential for illnesses associated with botulism.

Details of the Recall

The recall was initiated after inspectors from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets identified improperly processed fish during routine inspections. Analysis confirmed that the fish had not been eviscerated, meaning the internal organs were still intact. The FDA emphasized that the sale of uneviscerated fish violates state regulations due to the risk of Clostridium botulinum spores being concentrated in the viscera.

The “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” were distributed across the United States and are packaged in clear plastic bags weighing between 10 to 12 pounds. Consumers should look for the expiration date of May 19, 2025 stamped on the bottom of the packages. The product UPC is 908172635412.

Health Risks and Consumer Guidance

Health officials warn that consuming uneviscerated fish can lead to botulism poisoning, a serious condition that can result in severe health complications. Symptoms may include dizziness, blurred or double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing. Additional symptoms can manifest as abdominal distention, weakness of muscles, and even respiratory issues.

“Consumers who have purchased the ‘Dry Ghoinnya Fish’ are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the FDA stated. “Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.”

As of now, no illnesses have been reported related to this recall. Nevertheless, the FDA and health officials stress the importance of consumer awareness regarding this issue. Individuals who have purchased the affected product are encouraged to return it to the retailer for a refund.
