Barbara Bush Leads Celebrations at Planned Parenthood’s 35th Awards
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas celebrated its 35th annual Awards on December 9, 2025, at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. The event drew a full house at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to reproductive health and rights. Co-chairs Pam and John Beckert led the milestone occasion, which featured a lively discussion with activist and author Barbara Bush, moderated by five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist Tashara Parker.
During the event, Bush, who currently serves as the NBA’s Head of Social Responsibility, shared insights about her family with a blend of humor and sincerity. She recounted personal anecdotes, ranging from lighthearted moments with her relatives to profound memories of her grandmother, whom she described as steadfast in her dedication to family and various causes.
Acknowledging Contributions to Advocacy
The ceremony recognized significant contributions to social justice and advocacy. The Gertrude Shelburne Humanitarian Award was presented to Froswa’ Booker-Drew, Ph.D., who emphasized her extensive work on behalf of women and communities of color during her acceptance speech. Booker-Drew also discussed her collaboration with Planned Parenthood on a new initiative aimed at assisting women through perimenopause and menopause, highlighting her broader advocacy efforts in North Texas.
In addition, the Katherine Ripley Print Media Award was awarded to The Dallas Morning News for its investigative series “The Standard of Fear.” This series critically examined the impacts of restrictive reproductive care in Texas through compelling first-person narratives, underscoring the importance of media in informing the public about health issues.
Community Support and Engagement
Following the awards ceremony, attendees participated in a citywide dining initiative, visiting local restaurants such as Le Bilboquet, Nonna, Teak Tearoom, Mirador, and Lovers Seafood and Market. A portion of the proceeds from these establishments was donated to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, extending the event’s influence beyond the Arts District and fostering community support for reproductive health initiatives.
The event was attended by notable figures including Thana Hickman, Missy Falchi, and Ken Lambrecht, among others, showcasing a strong network of supporters committed to advancing reproductive rights and healthcare access. The 35th annual Awards not only celebrated past accomplishments but also set the stage for future initiatives aimed at empowering women and enhancing community health resources.
