Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School Marks 50 Years with Vibrant Powwow

Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 21, 2023, with a vibrant community powwow that brought together students, staff, and local residents. The event featured a traditional grand entry led by the Leech Lake Honor Guard, who also posted the colors to honor the significance of the occasion.

The powwow was a lively affair, showcasing a variety of cultural performances. Attendees participated in intertribal dances, spot dances, and a Woodlands Dance Contest. The contest was notably sponsored by two dedicated staff members, Gerald White and Kaiden Urrutia, both of whom are experienced dancers in the Woodlands style. Their involvement not only highlighted the cultural richness of the event but also fostered a sense of community among participants.

In addition to the celebrations, the school took a moment to recognize the contributions of John Parmeter, who is retiring after 35 years of service in various roles at Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School. Parmeter received a plaque, a blanket, and an honor song as tokens of appreciation for his dedication and commitment to the institution and its students.
