Community Unites to Serve Over 900 Thanksgiving Meals in Kauai
On November 28, 2025, community spirit shone brightly in Kauai as over 900 meals were served to those in need by the local branches of The Salvation Army. Volunteers from various organizations, including the Zonta Club of Kauai, Southwest Airlines, and the West Kauai Lions Club, came together for this heartfelt initiative.
The meals were prepared at both the Lihue and Hanapepe Corps locations, showcasing a collaborative effort that brought together diverse groups aimed at spreading holiday cheer. Notably, the Ke Kula O Kekaha Charter School and St. John’s Episcopal Church contributed significantly to the efforts, reflecting the strong community ties on the island.
In a touching moment, Ilima Rivera performed at the Lihue Corps using her father Larry Rivera’s guitar, honoring his legacy as a long-time entertainer at the annual Thanksgiving feast. After a brief hiatus, Ilima is set to perform again at the Kukui Grove Center holiday programming on December 13, beginning at noon.
The spirit of giving extended beyond meal preparation. The St. Michael’s and All Angels Church dedicated their Thanksgiving to delivering homemade pies to first responders, including the Kauai Police Department and the Kauai Fire Department. The Right Slice and Sandy Poenhelt, along with local basketball players, ensured that the Kalaheo fire station received ample support during the holiday.
As the community celebrated, attention also turned to upcoming events. The Kauai Handworks Craft Fair, a tradition now in its 45th year, will be held at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School cafeteria, starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Additionally, Kauai Hospice will host the first of three candlelighting vigils on Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church, beginning at 6 p.m. These vigils are designed to honor loved ones who are no longer present to celebrate the holidays.
The second candlelighting will take place at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church on Thursday, with the final event scheduled for the following Monday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Kilauea.
The collective efforts of volunteers and community organizations illustrate the strength of Kauai’s spirit, emphasizing gratitude and support for one another during the holiday season.
