Miami has made a significant political shift by electing its first Democratic mayor in three decades. Eileen Higgins triumphed over Republican candidate Emilio Gonzalez, who had the backing of former President Donald Trump. With her victory, Higgins not only breaks the GOP’s stronghold but also makes history as the first woman to lead the city.

Higgins, 61, a former county commissioner, campaigned vigorously on issues affecting the local Hispanic community, notably criticizing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that have created fear among residents. “Tonight, the people of Miami made history,” Higgins stated in her victory speech. She emphasized the importance of compassion in leadership, saying, “We are facing rhetoric from elected officials that is so dehumanizing and cruel, especially against immigrant populations. The residents of Miami were ready to be done with that.”

Nikki Fried, the Chair of the Florida Democratic Party, expressed her enthusiasm for the result, stating, “I am thrilled for Eileen and cannot think of a better person to shatter Miami’s glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to lead the city in its 129-year history.” Higgins had previously indicated her pride in representing the Democratic Party during a time of significant political challenges. “We’re living in the state of Florida, where we have people that are building cages for our residents rather than affordable housing for them,” she said.

Higgins’ victory marks a notable change in the political landscape of South Florida, reversing a trend of Republican dominance in recent elections. This shift comes on the heels of recent Democratic wins in Virginia and New Jersey, indicating a possible resurgence for the party ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Throughout her campaign, Higgins focused on the pressing issue of housing affordability, advocating for the construction of more affordable units to meet the needs of Miami’s residents. In contrast, Gonzalez backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis‘s proposal to eliminate property taxes for primary residences, a move aimed at appealing to conservative voters.

As Miami embarks on this new chapter under Higgins’ leadership, the impact of her policies on the local community and the broader political implications for the Democratic Party in Florida remain to be seen. The city has long been a focal point for political battles, and Higgins’ election may signal a shift in the dynamics of voter sentiment in the region.
