Instead, she recommended a more subtle approach. If either parent brings up their struggles, it could open a space for dialogue about their needs and desires. For example, one family member could offer to host the next holiday gathering, easing some of the burden from their mother. Should the conversation shift to downsizing, it is crucial to avoid pushing for immediate decisions about assisted living.

Bursack noted, “Keep the conversation gentle and supportive. Remain curious about their wishes.” She highlighted the importance of allowing parents to steer discussions about their future while also being open to their thoughts. If they prefer to change the subject, the family should respect that choice and continue enjoying their time together.

The columnist cautioned that if circumstances ever put the parents in immediate danger, the family would need to intervene decisively. However, she affirmed that the current situation does not warrant such drastic measures.
