Family and Friends Celebrate Life of Jim Knapp, 89, Pioneer in Real Estate
The family of James R. Knapp, known affectionately as Jim, commemorates the life of a remarkable man whose contributions to Southern California and unwavering commitment to family have left an indelible mark. Jim passed away at the age of 89, with his legacy deeply rooted in both his professional achievements and personal relationships.
A Life of Accomplishment and Service
Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s journey was characterized by a blend of intellect, faith, and generosity. He met his lifelong partner, Sally Diane Dewar, while in the Golden State, and their love story flourished at Stanford University, culminating in their marriage in September 1958.
Following their move to San Francisco, Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law. His legal career began at Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana, but his entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found the esteemed Newport Beach firm, Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth, alongside close friends.
Transitioning from law to real estate, Jim became a pivotal figure in Southern California’s development landscape. His work with Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises significantly shaped the region. In 1973, he established Brookhollow, a family business where he took pride in collaborating with his sons and grandsons, instilling values of hard work and integrity.
Community Engagement and Family Values
Jim’s professional journey was paralleled by his dedication to community service. He contributed his expertise to various boards, including those of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School, and served as an officer at Pacific Enterprises. As a founding member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, his influence extended across multiple spheres.
His marriage to Sally, which lasted an impressive 68 years, was filled with shared adventures around the globe, though they consistently prioritized family time. Jim’s deep Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life; he found solace in reading the Bible, listening to influential Christian leaders, and participating in activities at Mariners Church.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sally, and their children: Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany). He also leaves behind a niece, Donna Miller, along with cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His service will be held at Mariners Church on December 15, 2025, at 10:30 in the morning, followed by a private burial at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family finds solace in the knowledge that Jim’s remarkable journey has come to a peaceful conclusion.
In honoring his memory, the family encourages contributions to living memorials that reflect Jim’s spirit and values.
