The Leo High School choir delivered a stirring performance this morning at a special Veterans Day ceremony held at the South Side school. The event paid tribute to alumni who have served in the military, with the choir’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” resonating deeply with those in attendance.

Veterans from various conflicts, particularly from the Vietnam War, gathered to honor their service and reflect on their time at Leo High School. James Lewandowski, a Vietnam War veteran and former member of the Leo glee club, expressed pride in both his country and his alma mater. “I sang bass. I was singing right along with them, and I still hit the notes!” he recalled, referencing the choir’s recent recognition on America’s Got Talent.

Many veterans reminisced about their military experiences during the ceremony. Rich Venkus, another veteran, highlighted the distinct paths taken by alumni. “He was the airborne guy. He’s one of those crazy people that jumps out of planes. I was Air Force. I was in planes, but there’s no way I’m jumping out of them,” he said, sharing a light-hearted moment with fellow attendees.

Each year, veterans return to Leo High School just before Veterans Day to honor their classmates who served. This tradition is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the school’s alumni. Seventy-five Leo graduates, who served in various military branches, gave their lives in defense of their country. The names of those lost were read aloud during the ceremony, followed by a wreath-laying tribute that fostered a deep sense of community among the alumni, both past and present.

Lewandowski reflected on the significance of the event, noting the numerous plaques within the school commemorating alumni who died in conflicts such as World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm. “If you could look at some of the plaques on the wall, you could see how many men who died in World War II, in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and all wars following,” he stated.

The ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the choir but also reinforced the enduring legacy of service and sacrifice among the alumni of Leo High School. The gathering served as an emotional connection to their shared history, allowing veterans to honor their past while inspiring current students with stories of bravery and dedication.
