Leonia Captures First Cross-Country Title; Ridgewood Secures 31st
Leonia High School achieved a historic milestone on October 28, 2023, by winning its first-ever title at the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 girls’ cross-country championships. The event took place at Garret Mountain in Woodland Park, where the challenging terrain proved pivotal for the competing teams. Leonia’s success was driven by standout performances from sisters Dominique and Daniella Cameron, who played a crucial role in the team’s victory.
The competition unfolded on a course characterized by its steep hills and varying elevations, which tested the endurance and strategy of each runner. Leonia finished the meet with a total of 69 points, edging out second-place Ridgewood High School, which scored 84 points. This victory marks a significant achievement for Leonia, a program that has been striving for recognition in the competitive landscape of high school athletics.
Leonia’s triumph can be attributed to the Camerons’ remarkable performances. Dominique, the team’s leading runner, finished in third place overall with a time of 19:27. Daniella closely followed, securing fifth place with a time of 19:43. Their efforts not only propelled their team to victory but also highlighted the depth of talent within the Leonia program.
While Leonia celebrated its first title, Ridgewood added to its storied legacy by earning its 31st title in sectional history. Ridgewood’s consistent performance in cross-country remains a testament to its strong athletic program. Despite finishing second this year, the team showcased its competitive spirit and determination, ensuring their place among the top contenders in New Jersey.
The sectional finals at Garret Mountain were not just a test of physical endurance but also a showcase of sportsmanship and resilience. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on their experiences. Leonia will aim to maintain its momentum, while Ridgewood will seek to reclaim its championship title in future meets.
As the cross-country season continues, the achievements of both Leonia and Ridgewood serve as an inspiration for young athletes across the region. Their dedication and hard work exemplify the spirit of high school sports, where every race can be a stepping stone towards greater accomplishments.
