Malcolm Brogdon Retires After Successful Nine-Season NBA Career
Malcolm Brogdon, the veteran guard of the New York Knicks, has announced his retirement from the NBA after a distinguished nine-season career. The announcement came on Thursday, just one month after he signed with the Knicks, where he was anticipated to serve as a reserve player in the upcoming season starting on October 21, 2023.
In a heartfelt statement to ESPN, Brogdon, 32, expressed his gratitude for his basketball journey. “Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” he said. “I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.” He continued, “I am deeply grateful to have arrived at this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”
Brogdon retires as one of only two players in NBA history to have won both the Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards, alongside Mike Miller. He earned the Rookie of the Year accolade during the 2016-17 season with the Milwaukee Bucks and was later honored as the Sixth Man of the Year with the Boston Celtics in the 2022-23 season.
The New York Knicks issued a statement congratulating Brogdon on his retirement, saying, “Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm! Best of luck in your next chapter.”
During the 2024-25 NBA season, Brogdon played for the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds across 24 games, including 13 starts. Prior to his time with the Wizards, he had stints with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Celtics, as well as three seasons with the Indiana Pacers from 2019 to 2022. Brogdon began his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, who selected him in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft.
As Brogdon moves on from a career marked by significant achievements and contributions to the game, he leaves behind a legacy as a respected player who excelled in both starting and supporting roles. His decision to retire allows him to focus on new endeavors, cherishing the memories and experiences gained throughout his time in the NBA.
